You can read a WSJ article that goes into humorous detail on the subject <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424053111904103404576560742746021106\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I decided it was time to discuss ICD-10 after Karen attended a seminar on the subject this past weekend and one of the tidbits they provided seemed incorrect. (It was.) So, what do you (and by \u201cyou\u201d I mean small business health care providers) absolutely need to know about ICD-10? Here are the basics:<\/p>\n<h2>For claim submission<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Any <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">services<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> dated <em>on or<\/em> <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">after<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> October 1<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">st<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, 2015 must be submitted with ICD-10 codes. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Any <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">services<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> dated <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> October 1<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">st<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> \u2013 even if you submit the claim after October 1<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">st<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> \u2013 must use ICD-9 codes.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You absolutely cannot use both types of ICD code on a single claim \u2013 so make sure you handle September 30<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the same way you\u2019d handle December 31<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">st<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">everything gets billed.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though this change is mandated by HIPAA, some non-HIPAA covered entities like Workers\u2019 Compensation agencies have made it clear that they won\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(or don\u2019t intend to) be ready by 10\/1\/2015. Check either directly or through your state association to learn whether you\u2019re affected as we get closer to the deadline.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ICD-9 vs. ICD-10<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ICD-10 codes are much more specific, and there are many, many more of them. So, if you manage to walk into a <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">wall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> instead of a <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lamppost<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, yes, there\u2019s a code for that: W22.01XA.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You generally won\u2019t find a 1:1 correspondence between ICD-9 &amp; ICD-10 codes. There are websites where you can look up both <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.icd10data.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">codes and descriptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. And there are some that attempt to provide a crosswalk from ICD-9 to ICD-10 \u2013 but I would use those (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aapc.com\/icd-10\/codes\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">here\u2019s an example<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">) as a tool to help locate more precise codes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Laterality (side of the body affected) has been added to relevant ICD-10 codes. So, the code you use may inherently define left or right.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another difference relates to episode of care. Whereas an ICD-9 code remains the same over multiple doctor visits, ICD-10 codes <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">may<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> change if it\u2019s an injury or there\u2019s an external cause. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For example, a patient with a sprained ankle may return for re-evaluation to ensure the injury is healing properly. In the lamppost example above,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the ICD-10 code would likely change to <\/span>W22.02X<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>D<\/b>. The \u201cA\u201d (W22.02X<\/span>A) stands for \u201cinitial\u201d encounter (but \u201cacute phase of injury\u201d would be an appropriate way to think of it). The \u201cD\u201d stands for \u201csubsequent\u201d encounter. <em>In 2015, \u201cA\u201d was clarified with regard to chiropractic care to refer to \u201cacute,\u201d and\u00a0may to\u00a0be used for all\/multiple visits.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Injuries are now grouped by anatomical site rather than injury type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>ECLIPSE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Dr. Karen Walters, DC, FACC\u00a0discusses everything you need to know about ICD-10 in a 60 minute video that <a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/eclipsepracticemanagementsoftware.com\/eclipsesite\/video\/\">you can watch here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI just want to let you know how much I appreciate the ease of transition to ICD-10 with ECLIPSE.
